Renting a boat to the public is a different risk from owning one, and most personal marine policies say so in the exclusions. Before the first customer takes a boat out, the business needs coverage written for rental, and a file per booking that a broker can use if something goes wrong. This guide is what to ask. It is not insurance advice; names, limits and requirements differ by country, province, state and insurer.
The coverages a boat rental business is asked about
Hull and equipment. Your own boats, engines and gear against damage, theft and sinking, including while a customer is operating them. Ask how a boat is valued and what the deductible is per incident, because that deductible is what your customer deposit should cover.
Liability. Injury to people and damage to other boats, docks and property arising from a rental. Marinas and municipalities will ask to be named as additional insured.
Rental to the public. The clause that matters. Confirm in writing that the policy covers boats operated by renters, not only by you and your staff, and what the renter must hold (a licence, a permit, an age minimum) for coverage to apply.
Personal watercraft. Jet skis are often excluded or priced separately. If they are part of the plan, ask by name. The jet ski rental guide covers the operational side.
Paddle craft and guided trips. Kayaks and paddleboards are lower risk but still need liability for rental to the public; guided trips can change the policy.
Towing and watersports. Wakeboarding, tubing and skiing behind a rented boat are often excluded unless named.
Pollution and salvage. Fuel spills and the cost of raising a sunk boat are separate items on many policies.
Dock and premises. The place customers walk, board and disembark.
Questions for the broker
- Is rental to the public covered by name, and what must the renter hold for the coverage to apply?
- Which craft are excluded or limited: personal watercraft, sailboats, anything over a horsepower or length?
- What is the deductible per incident, so the deposit I hold covers it?
- Are towing and watersports covered?
- Is the boat covered when the renter has taken it outside the area I allow?
- What records will you want after a claim: signed waiver, agreement, handover checklist, fuel and hour readings, photos?
The records that make a claim simple
A signed waiver from every adult aboard, a signed agreement with the operator, a handover checklist with the boat's condition and fuel at departure and return, photos, and a per-boat history. Software that keeps those documents on the booking and the history on the boat means the file is already assembled. Share Marketplace keeps e-signed waivers, agreements and the handover checklist on each booking for boat rental operators. See boat rental software and the waivers and agreements guide.
