Payments and deposits for boat rentals

The deposit on a boat rental has to cover a real incident, and it has to come back fast when nothing happened. Share Marketplace holds a pre-authorization on the card before departure (Stripe or Square), releases it when the return checklist is signed, and captures part of it only with an itemised charge and the photos to back it.

Fuel is charged from the checklist reading, late return from the timestamp, damage from the itemised list the customer agreed to. Balances can be paid online, by link, or on a card reader at the dock, and every payment lands on the booking with a receipt.

How large should the deposit be?

Most operators hold the insurance deductible plus a fuel fill. A hold is not a charge; the customer’s card is only debited for an itemised amount.

Can I charge for fuel after the customer leaves?

Yes. The return checklist records the fuel level; the charge is calculated from it and taken from the hold or the card on file, with a receipt.
